Chesapeake Bay River Input Monitoring Program


Choptank River near Greensboro, Maryland

The monitoring station on the Choptank River is located in Greensboro, Md., and receives streamflow from about 14 percent of the 795 mi2 Choptank River Basin. The Choptank River is the largest river on Maryland's Eastern Shore, but contributes less than 1 percent of the streamflow delivered annually from the nontidal part of the Chesapeake Bay Basin. Of the nine major tributaries, it is the smallest contributor of nitrogen and phosphorus to the Bay. Land use in the basin is primarily agricultural, producing the fourth largest yield of total nitrogen and the fifth largest yield of total phosphorus of the nine tributary basins.
