The Patuxent River monitoring station is located in Bowie, Md., and receives streamflow from about 37 percent of the 932 mi2 Patuxent River Basin. The basin lies completely within Maryland, between Baltimore and Washington, D.C., in an area of increasing urbanization. The Patuxent River contributes less than one percent of the total streamflow delivered annually from the nontidal part of the Chesapeake Bay Basin. Water quality on the Patuxent is strongly affected by eight wastewater treatment plants located above the monitoring station. Because it primarily is affected by point sources, the river has the highest median concentration of total nitrogen and total phosphorus among the nine major tributaries, as well as relatively high yields for both nutrients.
