Chesapeake Bay River Input Monitoring Program

Rappahannock River near Fredericksburg, VA

The Rappahannock River monitoring station is located upstream of Fredericksburg, Va. The station receives streamflow from about 57 percent of the 2,800 mi2 Rappahannock River Basin. This river contributes about 3 percent of the total streamflow, 2 percent of the total nitrogen load, and 8 percent of the total phosphorus load delivered annually from the nontidal part of the Chesapeake Bay Basin by the nine major rivers. Nonpoint sources contribute the majority of the nutrient loads to this basin, although a few point sources, such as wastewater treatment plants, also are present (Belval and Sprague, 1999). Steep slopes and intensive agriculture cause the Rappahannock River Basin to produce high yields of suspended solids and the highest yields of total phosphorus among the nine river basins monitored.
