Chesapeake Bay River Input Monitoring Program

Mattaponi River near Beulahville, Virginia

The Mattaponi River monitoring station is located near Beulahville, VA, and receives streamflow from about 25 percent of the 2,400 mi2 York River Basin. The Mattaponi River contributes less than 1 percent of the total streamflow, the total nitrogen load, and the total phosphorus load delivered annually from the nontidal part of the Chesapeake Bay Basin. The Mattaponi River Basin is relatively flat and contains expanses of wetland areas, and nonpoint sources contribute the majority of nutrients to the river. Because of its small area and even elevation, the Mattaponi River has the second smallest load of both total nitrogen and total phosphorus of the nine major rivers, after the Choptank River; however, yields of total phosphorus and total nitrogen are the smallest.
