Water-Quality Sampling Demonstration: May 4, 2005

Water-quality sampling demonstration May 2005

On May 4, 2005, Doug Moyer, Ken Hyer, and John Jastram of USGS demonstrated water-quality sampling techniques to personnel from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ).

USGS and DEQ collect data--which may include water temperature, pH, specific conductance, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sediment--at sites across Virginia. The two agencies are aligning their methods of data collection and analysis so that these data will be more consistent and comparable.

The demonstration took place at the USGS streamgage on the James River at Cartersville, Va. Water-quality data usually are collected at or near streamgaging stations because streamflow data are useful for interpreting surface-water quality data.

Real-time water-quality data from the USGS are available online at http://waterdata.usgs.gov/va/nwis/current/?type=quality
