Monitor Your Own Stream 

Everyone is invited to test four key indicators of water quality: temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity. To participate, you can register and monitor your own site(s) or participate at a registered site.

Register your site 

Choose any lake, stream, bay, or other waterbody where you can safely monitor. Register your site now by going to the WWMD website at http://www.worldwatermonitoringday.org.

You may also register your monitoring event with Stewardship Virginia, a program sponsored by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation. Participants will receive certificates.

Post your event information on this site by contacting Gary Speiran (gspeiran@usgs.gov) so others can participate.

Participate at a registered site

Prepare your monitoring equipment

Use your own equipment or obtain an easy-to-use test kit. A limited number of free test kits are available on a first-come/first-served basis. Kits are also available for a small fee. Each kit contains an informative instruction book and enough reagents to repeat up to 50 tests.

Monitor your site

Invite others to help you monitor or do it yourself. Visit your site anytime from March 22 through December 31 to test the water. When monitoring your own stream, take care to verify that your data are within common limits. These limits are purely guidelines and values can be outside these limits. It would be good to retest the water if your results are outside of these limits to verify your results. Remember, safety first!

Report your data

Submit your results by returning to the World Water Monitoring Day website where you registered your site. Results may be submitted anytime from March 22 through December 31 for inclusion in the annual World Water Monitoring Day summary reports. Take care to verify your results when submitting them and compare them to the common limits. Results from throughout Virginia will be processed and then provided for posting on this website as are results from previous years.
