U.S.
Geological Survey (USGS) scientists and representatives from the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency (USEPA), universities, and local and state agencies conducted a workshop to
discuss the availability, vulnerability, and quality of ground water in
the Piedmont and Blue Ridge Physiographic Provinces of the eastern United
States. These provinces encompass about 96,000 square miles in parts
of New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, the District of Columbia,
Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama
(map).

Demand on the ground-water resources will increase as growth expands out from the major urban centers located within the region (animation of urban growth in the Baltimore-Washington D.C. area from the USGS Urban Dynamics Research Program). Knowledge about ground-water movement, storage, vulnerability, and connection with the surface-water resources is limited because of the complex fractured rock aquifers that underlie the region. A better understanding of the relation between the complex geology and ground-water resources is needed for water-resource managers and planners to develop effective management strategies for the future. | |
