The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) provides data on stream flow, ground-water levels, and water quality at sites throughout the United States. These data are published annually in Water Data Reports by state. Some historical and real-time water data are available at no cost via the World Wide Web. Specialized historical data can be retrieved upon request from computer databases at the cost of retrieval, reproduction, and distribution. These costs are also dependent on the size, urgency, restoration and review process of data (if necessary).

The USGS is authorized to charge for requests for data not routinely provided through our Internet site, or requests requiring more than 30 minutes of time to fill. Near real-time stream flow data are available online for more many stations in Virginia. Daily stream flow data for Virginia (for the last 16 months) are online and historic daily values (older than 16 months) may be retrieved via on line forms. Therefore, two separate retrieval processes are required to obtain complete daily values for more than 2 years of record. Peak flow data are also available online.
