Problem:  In connection with its design of bridge openings the cooperator requires information regarding the hydrologic and hydraulic characteristics of specific reaches of streams.

Objective: To collect flood information at various sites in Virginia for use in flood frequency determinations and to document flood data for future bridge sites.

Relevance and Benefits: An important part of the Virginia Department of Transportation's missions is the safe maintenance, design, and construction of bridges that cross-waterways and wetlands in the State. The data collected by USGS in conjunction with this project is a vital element of the overall task and mission of the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Approach: Operate crest-stage gages at 95 sites. Make indirect measurements of peak flow as unusual floods occur.  Publish peak-flow data in the annual data report and enter into the Peak Flow File of the WATSTORE System.  Prepare special reports as required for unusual flood events.
