Problem:  The Naval Weapons Depot at Yorktown, Virginia requires an inventory of existing ground-water data at the Base to assess the extent of additional data requirements for a facility-wide ground-water assessment.

Objective: To determine the extent and caliber of existing ground-water data at the Base and to advise concerning additional data needs to perform an assessment.

Relevance and Benefits: The results of this study will aid in our understanding of shallow aquifer systems in the Coastal Plain of Virginia by providing detail information on the different hydrogeologic units and on processes affecting ground-water flow and storage.  The Station will be able to use this information to guide future site investigations and evaluate potential management and remediation activities.

Approach: USGS personnel will research and collect ground-water records at the Base and will enter the data into a Geographic Information System data base.  Maps will be generated to identify areas of the facility requiring additional data and a plan for gathering additional data will be developed.
