Virginia Water Monitoring Day 2010 The statewide events webpage will be updated as more events are confirmed, so check back often. World Water Monitoring Day TM (WWMD) is an international education and outreach program that builds public awareness and involvement in protecting water resources around the world by engaging citizens to conduct basic monitoring of their local water bodies. The program engages communities in monitoring the condition of local rivers, streams, estuaries, and other water bodies. WWMD is coordinated by the Water and Environment Federation (WEF) and the International Water Association (IWA) . The Virginia Water Monitoring Council encourages World Water Monitoring Day activities in Virginia. The following information and links are designed to help you better understand Water Monitoring Day in Virginia and around the world and to plan to participate in a monitoring event in a watershed near you. From the inception of WWMD in 2002 through 2005, more than 80,000 people in 50 countries participated in WWMD. In 2009 alone, more that 120,000 people monitored more than 8,090 sites in 81 countries, an increase of 67% over 2008. In Virginia, 1,667 sites were monitored, more than any other state or country in the world. Virginia had 2,660 participants, second only to Iowa; four countries other than the United States had more participants. Join the Virginia effort in 2010. Although World Water Monitoring Day is officially celebrated on September 18 each year, the monitoring window was expanded in 2009 to include March 22 (World Water Day) -- December 31. If you register your sites(s) and submit your data to the WWMD web site, your data will become part of a world-wide data set and also will be included with other data collected in Virginia in 2010 like that of past years (see below) and will be accessible at this web site when available. After you register your site(s) and plan your event, please email Gary Speiran at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) (gspeiran@usgs.gov) so that your event can be listed with other "Statewide Events" to promote greater participation in your event. Our goal is to have events in every basin in Virginia!
