Virginia Water Science CenterWelcome to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Virginia Water Science Center web page. The Center collects, analyzes, and interprets data on the quality, occurrence, and flow of waters in the aquifers, streams, lakes, estuaries, and wetlands of the Commonwealth of Virginia. These data, analyses, and interpretations are provided through traditional and web-based media to assist local, State and Federal agencies; industries; environmental organizations; the public; and others in managing Virginia's water resources for their protection and use. The USGS and its local, State, and Federal cooperators support the short-term interpretive studies and long-term data-collection programs that provide these data and their analysis and interpretation. Data include continuously collected data transmitted by satellite (real time) and periodically collected data that are part of the USGS National Water Information System (NWIS)). Technically and management oriented publications and web-based media provide these interpretations and analyses.
The USGS provides current ("real-time") stream stage and streamflow (198 sites), water-quality (38 sites), and groundwater levels for 123 sites in Virginia.

Featured ProjectClarke CountySpout Run The area considered in this study encompasses both the carbonate and non-carbonate rocks in Clarke County, Va. Water-quality protection efforts- as outlined in the Water Resources, Groundwater Resources, and the Surface Water Resources Plans- are included in the County's Comprehensive Plan. These efforts are based on previous investigations that have been conducted in the County since the late-1980s. The establishment of a long-term data network and further evaluation of information from previous studies was part of this hydrogeologic assessment, and will aid future land-use and water-supply planning activities in the County.
